An ethnography on how LGBTQ students (didn’t) use campus resources

The Challenge

For my ethnographic field methods class, I conducted a semester-long field study in a campus LGBTQ resource center. Although it was designed to be an emergent study with few set goals, I was quickly asked by multiple sides to understand why students weren't using the space and organizations.

The Research

I conducted over 30 hours of participant observation with field notes. Eleven semi-structured interviews were done across various stakeholders and student identities.

The Impact

Although the results of this study cannot be publicly published, my analysis looked at how physical space and social groups created multiple communities and feelings of inclusion/exclusion.
